Getting Started

Essential mechanics and early-game strategies to survive your first hours in the desert.

Genre: Survival / Open World / Action RPG

Survival Mechanics

Monitor your Hydration, Heat Exposure, and Stamina bars. Hydration depletes 2x faster during sandstorms. Rest in shade during midday (11:00-15:00) to prevent heatstroke debuff.

Essential Beginner
🗺

Navigation

Use the stars at night for direction when your compass malfunctions in magnetic zones. Mark water sources on your map immediately — they are your lifeline. The map reveals itself as you explore.

Essential Beginner

First Combat

Conserve ammunition — it is scarce. Use melee against single Scavengers. Aim for the head with the Rusted Pistol; body shots waste precious bullets. Early game: melee > guns.

Beginner
🔧

Crafting Priority

First craft: Waterskin (3x Leather, 1x Resin). Then: Bandages (2x Cloth). Do not waste resources on weapons early — scavenged gear is sufficient until Act II.

Essential
👁

Stealth Approach

Crouch-walk on sand to muffle footsteps. Use sandstorms for audible cover. Avoid line of sight with patrols — fighting multiple enemies early is lethal. Takedowns give 3.5x damage bonus.

Trading Smart

Water is currency. Trade excess ammunition at Oasis Outposts. Do not sell rare crafting materials — you will need them for endgame gear. Prices fluctuate based on region scarcity.

💡
Pro Tip: The First Hour Your starting canteen only holds 2 units of water. Head northeast immediately to find the Abandoned Well — this secures your early water supply and unlocks fast travel. Do not explore south first; the Scavenger ambush there is designed to kill unprepared players.

Act-by-Act Walkthrough

Complete mission breakdown with optimal paths, choices, and rewards. Contains spoilers for mission names and general structure.

Total Missions: 22 Story + 12 Side
|
Choices Matter: 8 major decisions
|
Endings: 2 (Standard + True)
Act I: Awakening
📅 Missions 1-6 ⏱ ~6 hours 🏆 Rewards: Survival Knife, Basic Map
  • Mission 1 - The Crash: Loot all 4 supply crates before leaving the crash site. The hidden crate behind the dune contains a Medkit. Check the pilot's body for a Journal Entry ( collectible ).
  • Mission 2 - First Contact: Choose to help the Nomad (morality +10) rather than rob him. He later sells rare items at 20% discount and gives you a key quest item in Act II.
  • Mission 4 - Sandstorm Run: Wait for the storm to peak before crossing the canyon. Enemies cannot see you during peak intensity. Use this window to bypass the patrol entirely.
  • Mission 6 - The Outpost: Sneak through the eastern gate. The frontal assault route costs too much ammo and health. The eastern route has a broken fence you can crawl through.
Act II: The Wasteland
📅 Missions 7-14 ⏱ ~12 hours 🏆 Rewards: Scoped Rifle, Sand Skiff
  • Mission 8 - Water Wars: Side with the Farmers over the Raiders. Farmers provide free water refills for the rest of the game. Raiders only give a one-time loot reward.
  • Mission 10 - The Convoy: Plant explosives at the bridge chokepoint. Do not engage on open ground — the convoy has a mounted gunner that deals 200 DPS.
  • Mission 12 - Deep Desert: Upgrade your heat suit before entering. Without Heat Resistance II, stamina regenerates at 50% speed and you take periodic burn damage.
  • Mission 14 - The Signal: Decode the radio message by tuning to frequency 88.4. This reveals the location of the Hidden Cache containing the Sniper Scope blueprint.
Side Quests - Act II
💡 Recommended before Act III
  • The Lost Caravan: Follow the vulture circle at coordinates (x:450, y:890). Rewards: Camel Companion (extra inventory slots + passive water discovery).
  • Desert Rose: Collect 5 rare flowers for the herbalist. Rewards: Poison Resistance potion recipe. Essential for the Sunken City.
  • Bounty: Red Talon: High difficulty. Use explosive barrels in the camp. Rewards: Legendary Scorpion Pistol (best handgun in game).
Act III: Revelation
📅 Missions 15-22 ⏱ ~15 hours 🏆 Rewards: Desert Eagle Blueprint, True Ending Access
  • Mission 16 - The City Beneath: Bring glowsticks — torches extinguish in the underground wind tunnels. Light sources also attract the Cave Stalkers.
  • Mission 18 - Betrayal: Your companion Kael will betray you if your Trust meter is below 60. Complete his personal quest in Act II to guarantee loyalty.
  • Mission 20 - Storm Wall: Use the Sand Skiff to outrun the wall. On foot, survival is nearly impossible without the Wind-Runner boots.
  • Mission 22 - Final Stand: Place proximity mines at the three chokepoints before the horde arrives. Focus fire on the Sand Leviathan's exposed underbelly when it rears. Phase 3 is a DPS race — save your heavy ammo.
Spoiler Warning: True Ending To unlock the True Ending, you must find all 6 Ancient Tablets before Mission 21. Missing even one locks you into the Standard Ending. Tablets are located in: The Sunken Temple, Old Radar Station, Crystal Caves, Nomad Sanctuary, Pirate's Grave, and The Last Oasis.
03

Combat System

Master every weapon class and learn advanced techniques to dominate the wasteland.

Weapon Type Damage Range Ammo Best For
Survival Knife Melee 25 Close Silent takedowns, conserving ammo
Rusted Pistol Handgun 35 Medium 9mm Early game, single targets
Sandstorm Rifle Assault 42 Long 5.56mm Mid-game general use
Scorpion Sniper Sniper 120 Extreme .50 cal Picking off patrols, boss weakpoints
Desert Eagle (Crafted) Handgun 85 Medium .44 Mag High burst damage, close-mid range
Firebomb Thrown 60 + 20/s Throw Crafted Groups, area denial

Advanced Techniques

Sand Slide Cancel While sliding down a dune, melee attack to cancel the slide animation and immediately enter ADS. Saves 0.4 seconds and catches enemies off-guard. Essential for PvP and speedruns.
Heat Mirage Shot During extreme heat (above 45°C), bullet trajectory drops 15% more. Aim slightly higher for long shots. The Scorpion Sniper's scope has a heat-adjustment reticle — use the lower tick.
Quick Swap Reload Switch weapons immediately after firing the last round. The reload animation continues in the background. Swap back after 1.5s for an instantly loaded weapon. Works with all weapon classes.
Stagger Lock Hit an enemy with a melee attack, immediately shoot, then melee again. This creates a stagger loop that locks most human enemies in place. Does not work on Brutes or the Sand Leviathan.

Damage Modifiers

Headshot
x3.0
Body
x1.0
Limb
x0.7
Sandstorm
x0.6
Stealth
x3.5
Fire on Oil
x4.0

Critical Insight: Stealth headshots with the Survival Knife deal 3.5x base damage multiplied by the stealth modifier, resulting in 87.5 damage — enough to one-shot any standard enemy except Brutes.

💡
Best DPS Rotation Open with a stealth headshot (Scorpion: 420 dmg), swap to Desert Eagle for 2 body shots (170 dmg), then finish with knife if needed. Total time: ~2.5s. This combo deletes any non-boss enemy.

Enemy Guide

Know your foes. Every enemy type, weakness, and recommended strategy. Don't go in blind.

Enemy HP Damage Weakness Strategy
Scavenger 60 Low Headshots Basic grunts. Silent takedown or single headshot. Often travel in pairs.
Raider 100 Medium Fire, Explosives Use cover. They flank aggressively. Firebombs destroy their groups.
Brute 300 High Back attacks, Slow Kite and strike from behind. Never trade hits. 3x headshot with rifle.
Sniper 80 Very High Close range, Reveal Move unpredictably. Close distance quickly. Laser sight gives them away.
Sand Stalker 150 High Light, Sound Underground ambushers. Listen for sand shifts. Throw glowstick to surface them.
Cultist 120 Medium Stealth Patrol in predictable patterns. Easy to bypass. If detected, they summon reinforcements.
Sand Leviathan (Boss) 5,000 Extreme Underbelly, Explosives Phase 1: Avoid charge. Phase 2: Mines at chokepoints. Phase 3: Shoot underbelly when reared.
👁
Elite Enemy Warning Elite variants (marked by red nameplates) have 2x health and deal 1.5x damage. They also resist the standard weakness. Against Elite Brutes, use explosive barrels instead of melee. Against Elite Stalkers, bring a flamethrower — glowsticks are not enough. Elites first appear in Act II and become common in Act III.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions from players.

Red Desert takes approximately 40-60 hours for the main story on Normal difficulty. A 100% completionist run including all side quests, collectibles, and the True Ending will take 80-100 hours. Speedruns typically clock in at 4-6 hours with optimized routes. Nightmare difficulty adds roughly 20 hours due to increased challenge and limited saves.

The Ranger build is recommended for beginners due to its safe engagement range and high damage output. Prioritize Ranged Damage and Accuracy stats, equip the Nomad Cloak and Scorpion Sniper rifle, and use the Spotter Drone to scout enemies before engaging. This build lets you learn enemy patterns from a safe distance.

To unlock the True Ending, you must find all 6 Ancient Tablets before completing Mission 21. The tablets are located in: The Sunken Temple, Old Radar Station, Crystal Caves, Nomad Sanctuary, Pirate's Grave, and The Last Oasis. Missing even one tablet locks you into the Standard Ending. See the Secrets section for exact locations.

Yes, but only once per playthrough. Visit the Statue of Rebirth in the Oasis (unlocked after Act I) to reset all spent skill points. After using it, the statue crumbles. Plan your build carefully, or save before respeccing if you want to experiment. New Game+ allows one additional respec.

Red Desert is single-player only at launch. The developers have confirmed that a co-op mode is in development and will arrive in a free update (targeting Q3 2025). The game features companion AI characters that you can recruit and equip, providing a pseudo-co-op experience.

In New Game+, you keep: all weapons, armor, crafting materials, blueprints, and unlocked fast travel points. You lose: quest items, story progress, companion relationships, and map exploration data. Enemy scaling increases by 50%, and new "Veteran" enemy variants appear. This is the best way to experience the True Ending if you missed collectibles.
