Getting Started
Essential mechanics and early-game strategies to survive your first hours in the desert.
Survival Mechanics
Monitor your Hydration, Heat Exposure, and Stamina bars. Hydration depletes 2x faster during sandstorms. Rest in shade during midday (11:00-15:00) to prevent heatstroke debuff.
Navigation
Use the stars at night for direction when your compass malfunctions in magnetic zones. Mark water sources on your map immediately — they are your lifeline. The map reveals itself as you explore.
First Combat
Conserve ammunition — it is scarce. Use melee against single Scavengers. Aim for the head with the Rusted Pistol; body shots waste precious bullets. Early game: melee > guns.
Crafting Priority
First craft: Waterskin (3x Leather, 1x Resin). Then: Bandages (2x Cloth). Do not waste resources on weapons early — scavenged gear is sufficient until Act II.
Stealth Approach
Crouch-walk on sand to muffle footsteps. Use sandstorms for audible cover. Avoid line of sight with patrols — fighting multiple enemies early is lethal. Takedowns give 3.5x damage bonus.
Trading Smart
Water is currency. Trade excess ammunition at Oasis Outposts. Do not sell rare crafting materials — you will need them for endgame gear. Prices fluctuate based on region scarcity.
Act-by-Act Walkthrough
Complete mission breakdown with optimal paths, choices, and rewards. Contains spoilers for mission names and general structure.
- Mission 1 - The Crash: Loot all 4 supply crates before leaving the crash site. The hidden crate behind the dune contains a Medkit. Check the pilot's body for a Journal Entry ( collectible ).
- Mission 2 - First Contact: Choose to help the Nomad (morality +10) rather than rob him. He later sells rare items at 20% discount and gives you a key quest item in Act II.
- Mission 4 - Sandstorm Run: Wait for the storm to peak before crossing the canyon. Enemies cannot see you during peak intensity. Use this window to bypass the patrol entirely.
- Mission 6 - The Outpost: Sneak through the eastern gate. The frontal assault route costs too much ammo and health. The eastern route has a broken fence you can crawl through.
- Mission 8 - Water Wars: Side with the Farmers over the Raiders. Farmers provide free water refills for the rest of the game. Raiders only give a one-time loot reward.
- Mission 10 - The Convoy: Plant explosives at the bridge chokepoint. Do not engage on open ground — the convoy has a mounted gunner that deals 200 DPS.
- Mission 12 - Deep Desert: Upgrade your heat suit before entering. Without Heat Resistance II, stamina regenerates at 50% speed and you take periodic burn damage.
- Mission 14 - The Signal: Decode the radio message by tuning to frequency 88.4. This reveals the location of the Hidden Cache containing the Sniper Scope blueprint.
- The Lost Caravan: Follow the vulture circle at coordinates
(x:450, y:890). Rewards: Camel Companion (extra inventory slots + passive water discovery). - Desert Rose: Collect 5 rare flowers for the herbalist. Rewards: Poison Resistance potion recipe. Essential for the Sunken City.
- Bounty: Red Talon: High difficulty. Use explosive barrels in the camp. Rewards: Legendary Scorpion Pistol (best handgun in game).
- Mission 16 - The City Beneath: Bring glowsticks — torches extinguish in the underground wind tunnels. Light sources also attract the Cave Stalkers.
- Mission 18 - Betrayal: Your companion Kael will betray you if your Trust meter is below 60. Complete his personal quest in Act II to guarantee loyalty.
- Mission 20 - Storm Wall: Use the Sand Skiff to outrun the wall. On foot, survival is nearly impossible without the Wind-Runner boots.
- Mission 22 - Final Stand: Place proximity mines at the three chokepoints before the horde arrives. Focus fire on the Sand Leviathan's exposed underbelly when it rears. Phase 3 is a DPS race — save your heavy ammo.

Regions & Locations
Know every territory. Each region holds unique resources, dangers, and secrets.
The Shifting Dunes
The starting region. Gentle hills and scattered ruins. Good for learning mechanics and farming basic materials. Home to the Crash Site and Abandoned Well.
Razor Canyon
Tight corridors and elevation changes favor ambush tactics. Raiders control the bridges — pay toll or fight. Contains the hidden Dune Buggy garage.
The Verdant Oasis
The only safe trading hub in the desert. No combat allowed. Home to merchants, quest givers, and the Save Shrine. Fast travel hub for all regions.
Sunken City Ruins
Collapsed buildings create a maze-like environment. Home to the Cult of the Deep. Ancient technology lies buried here. Bring glowsticks, not torches.
Salt Flats
Endless white plains with zero cover. Crystal formations reflect sunlight, causing disorientation. Night travel recommended. Contains the Golden Scorpion legendary weapon.
The Scar
Permanently storm-wracked wasteland at the map's edge. Only accessible with the Storm-Walker suit. Endgame content. Final Ancient Tablet and True Ending key located here.
Optimal Loadouts
Three proven builds for different playstyles, tested on Hard difficulty with Patch 1.4.2.
Avoid direct combat. Use sandstorms for cover. Prioritize silent takedowns and escape routes. Best for speedruns and pacifist runs. Not recommended for beginners — requires deep game knowledge.
Face enemies head-on. Draw aggro while companions deal damage. Excellent for escort missions and boss fights. Slow but unstoppable. Beginner-friendly and very forgiving.
Engage from maximum range. Use high ground and terrain. Mark enemies with the drone before opening fire. Best for open regions and large encounters. Best build for beginners.

Secrets & Easter Eggs
Unlock everything. From hidden weapons to the True Ending. This is the endgame content.
The Six Tablets
Required for the True Ending. Each tablet is hidden behind a puzzle. Sunken Temple (flood the chamber), Old Radar Station (frequency 88.4), Crystal Caves (mirror light puzzle), Nomad Sanctuary (win the race), Pirate's Grave (dig at the X), The Last Oasis (bring all 5 oasis flowers).
Golden Scorpion
A hidden legendary pistol found in the Salt Flats. At the northernmost edge, look for a half-buried skeleton holding the weapon. Deals 150 damage with poison DOT. Only spawns after completing the "Bounty: Red Talon" quest.
The Dev Room
Behind a fake wall in the Sunken City Ruins at coordinates (x:1024, y:768). Use 10 explosives to break the wall. Contains developer messages, a joke weapon (Rubber Chicken, 1 damage), and a photo of the dev team.
Hidden Vehicle: Dune Buggy
Faster than the Sand Skiff with mounted machine gun. Found in a locked garage at the Old Military Base. Key is carried by the Elite Raider Commander during Mission 10. Missable — loot his body before the mission ends.
Companion: Shadow
A tame Sand Stalker that fights alongside you. To recruit: Find the injured pup in the Canyon (Act I), feed it 5x Raw Meat over 3 in-game days, then defend it from poachers. Shadow deals 80 damage per hit and can detect buried items within 30 meters.
Achievement: Desert Legend
The hardest achievement: Complete the game on Nightmare difficulty without dying, with all 6 tablets, with maximum Trust from all companions, and without killing any non-hostile NPCs. Reward: Platinum Trophy + Golden Outfit skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions from players.
Red Desert takes approximately 40-60 hours for the main story on Normal difficulty. A 100% completionist run including all side quests, collectibles, and the True Ending will take 80-100 hours. Speedruns typically clock in at 4-6 hours with optimized routes. Nightmare difficulty adds roughly 20 hours due to increased challenge and limited saves.
The Ranger build is recommended for beginners due to its safe engagement range and high damage output. Prioritize Ranged Damage and Accuracy stats, equip the Nomad Cloak and Scorpion Sniper rifle, and use the Spotter Drone to scout enemies before engaging. This build lets you learn enemy patterns from a safe distance.
To unlock the True Ending, you must find all 6 Ancient Tablets before completing Mission 21. The tablets are located in: The Sunken Temple, Old Radar Station, Crystal Caves, Nomad Sanctuary, Pirate's Grave, and The Last Oasis. Missing even one tablet locks you into the Standard Ending. See the Secrets section for exact locations.
Yes, but only once per playthrough. Visit the Statue of Rebirth in the Oasis (unlocked after Act I) to reset all spent skill points. After using it, the statue crumbles. Plan your build carefully, or save before respeccing if you want to experiment. New Game+ allows one additional respec.
Red Desert is single-player only at launch. The developers have confirmed that a co-op mode is in development and will arrive in a free update (targeting Q3 2025). The game features companion AI characters that you can recruit and equip, providing a pseudo-co-op experience.
In New Game+, you keep: all weapons, armor, crafting materials, blueprints, and unlocked fast travel points. You lose: quest items, story progress, companion relationships, and map exploration data. Enemy scaling increases by 50%, and new "Veteran" enemy variants appear. This is the best way to experience the True Ending if you missed collectibles.
